SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a commonly used protocol for managing the security of message transmission on the Internet. This protocol was developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents over the internet. SSL works by using RSA's public and private key encryption system to encrypt data transferred over the internet and secure user sites by encrypting information and providing authentication. Today, many browsers including Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL. Many websites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers (e-commerce). By convention, web pages that require SSL connections start with https:// instead of http://
