Windows Firewall Settings: Adding a Firewall Rule

This article is to assist you in setting up or checking the Windows Server Firewall.

Opening the Firewall Interface

To open the firewall interface on Windows Server, you can open it with a shortcut via Server Manager. Server Manager access can be opened by clicking the Start button in Windows Server 2016 & 2019. As for the Windows 2012 version, you can click directly in the Desktop taskbar area.

Then in the Server Manager section, click Tools and then select Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.

Adding a New Rule in Firewall

Then a new Firewall window will open. On the dashboard (center box) there is a list of firewall rules that have been created by default by the Windows system or built-in software that has been integrated by the Windows Server service.

To add a new rule, you click Inbound Rules on the left.

Then look at the window on the far right, and select New Rule... as shown in the image below.

Then we will determine what rule for this Firewall entry.

Adding Firewall Service Rule Entry

The following will show step by step in sequence the interface for adding a Firewall entry service rule.

First, first determine what category you will specify in adding an entry service rule at the Firewall. The easiest way is categorization based on port service. Because it will be easier to monitor.

In this study case, you will add a Firewall rule entry for the Remote Desktop or RDP port. By default the Remote Desktop port is 3389, but for security reasons, by default all VPS are set to port 3399. This time we will try to add a Firewall entry for Remote Desktop on port 3399.

Select Port.

Then in the second option, select TCP then Specific local port 3399.

If you want to add another port, feel free to fill in your own preferences. But make sure you have changed the RDP port first before entering this Firewall entry.

In the next option select  Allow the connection.

After that, select the firewall profire that you want to Apply. In this case, by default just check all, or just go next.

Finally, name the Firewall entry profile that you created earlier. Then Finish.
