How to deploy Hermes by using Debian 12?
Answer
Here are step by step. In this case, we are using VPS Linux Debian 12 with 3 GB RAM, 2 CPU core, 40 GB disk.
Install needed dependency for Debian 12 and additional library for web search.
apt install -y curl git tar software-properties-common build-essential apt install -y libatk1.0-0 libatk-bridge2.0-0 libcups2 libdrm2 libxkbcommon0 libxcomposite1 libxdamage1 libxrandr2 libgbm1 libpango-1.0-0 libcairo2 libasound2
Run the official installer.
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash
Now wait until finished. Once finished, reload our environment work. After a while, the installer will ask you for an action:
- Quick Setup (free but limited)
- Full Setup (Configure every provider, tools, and bring your own keys)
- Blank slate (Everything off except the bare minimum)
If you already have the API keys, then you may setup number 2. Else, if you want to try first then number 1. In this case, we try number 2.
Choose the provider. In this case, since we are using custom LLM Provider, therefore fill Custom.
- Full the API base URL.
- API key.
- Select 1 for Auto-detect.
- Choose your suitable AI Models.
Next select reasoning effort. The more you set long, the more your token will be drained. Therefore, for most case, would recommend medium.
Now we are going to select platform to be configured. You need to define which platform you wish to take. Most people may choose telegram, email, or whatsapp. Some additional steps to sync with API account is needed.
Next you will ask for CLI tools that need to be used. Lets leave as default as it is.
They will ask for search engine option as well. Since we already install additional chromium library, then choose Local.
When it asked for Choose a provider for search engine, you may choose what suitable for your environment.
Setup finished now reload your shell to use hermes.

Check version after finished.
hermes --version
