What is Resource usage or LVE?

What is LVE? 


CloudLinux LVE (Lightweight Virtual Environment) is used to set resource limits under shared hosting plans.

How to check your current hosting usage?


You can check the resources as below by logging in to cPanel and it will be either on your left or right panel which depends on your cPanel style. 


  •  CPU Usage 
  •  Physical Memory Usage 
  •  Entry Processes 
  •  Number of Processes 
  •  IOPS 
  •  I/O Usage



CPU Usage

  • Indicates for speed of loading for website
  • When CPU usage hitting 100%, it will slow down your website because new processes will be as waiting status until the existing processes to be completed.



Physical Memory Usage 

  • Indicates the total memory of your hosting.
  • The limits will be depending on different packages of hosting. When hitting the limit, it will usually cause error 500 or 503.



Entry Processes 

  • Indicates the number of PHP scripts you can run at a time when accessing your website.
  • The process enters into LVE when there is a new HTTP request for CGI/PHP. Hitting the limit will cause page error 508 Resource Limit Reached. 



Number of processes 

  • Controlled by NPROC within LVE. Once the limit is reached, Apache will return 500 or 503 errors.


IOPS 

  • Referred to Inputs Outputs Per Second. It is concerned with the speed of a hard drive can read data or write data to hard drive. When the limit is reached, the operation of read/write will stop until current second expires.



 I/O Usage 

  • Referred to disk I/O. It determines how fast your website allowed to perform input/output operation per second on the server disk of hosting. When a visitor visits your website or send/receive email, your hosting is performing I/O operations on the server disk.


Advantages of higher I/O Limit


1. More Read/Write data can be done onto the disk.

2. Very useful for hosting videos for download/streaming.

3. Make large scripts run faster.

4. Help with large database queries & operation.

5. Prevent hang or slow loading for large site or heavy load scripts. 


Common causes of resource overused


1. Large traffic surges


Surges in traffic will happen when

i. Your website is being crawled by automated bots (search engine)

ii. Your website is getting attacked with spam comments

iii. Your website has large amount of legitimate traffic


In this case, can try to optimize the website so that the traffic spikes use fewer resources.



2. Intensive cron jobs


A cron job is a scheduled task which user do not have to actually be present to initiate the task. In most cases, a cron job that run every minute or as often as every five minutes can cause a server issue which depends on how intensive the task is attempting to run. If you think this may be an issue, may try to disable it and see if your resource usage is decreasing.



3. Badly written scripts


Scripts or plugins that are not updated to latest version or coded improperly can cause malfunction. Loop in requesting to the scripts will push the website resource to be overused


4. Malware and hacker activity


A hacked website can be a cause of resource overused due to the malicious code will try to process multiple things for each page to load on top. Mostly the activities are automated which leads to a higher amount of resource usage to handle the excessive amount of requests. 


To get detailed resource usage in cPanel, kindly follow the steps below

1.Click on the Resource Usage under METRICS. 



2. Click on DETAILS. 



3. Click on the Timeframe and Time Unit to filter based on your needs. 




CPU – CPU limits

vMEM/vM – Virtual Memory limits

pMEM/pM – Physical Memory limits

EP – Entry Processes

nPROC/nP – Number of Processes

IO – Input/Output limits

 

a – average used

l – limit set for account

m – maximal used

f – failure
